Thank you so much Seajets Magazine and Ioanna Zymariti for this interview!
DORA BAMI AND CHARLES DEVOYER SIGN THE CREATIONS THAT ARE BORN THROUGH THE CHARM OF THE BLUE THAT THEY ENCOUNTER ON THEIR VOYAGES AND CAPTURE IN THEIR PHOTOS, AS “KYANO”.
It all started in Folegandros. This is where Dora and Charles met the “best” blue, on the island with the authentic natural beauty where the idea of the first “Kyano” series of photographs was born. Dora is a Greek designer who uses her dreams as a compass for
the constant search for the new, for the unknown. “I believe that clothes are more than just fabric. They create an entire scenery, a specific atmosphere, they declare something of our personality. It is something that moves with us, accompanies us, participates in our
experiences and memories”, she comments. In the conversation we had with them, both would agree that “somehow blue chose us, we did not choose it!”.
Do you ever think that it is a “shame” that all other colours are lost from your frames?
We have not felt this “absence” yet. The distinctive blue of the blueprint has fascinated us and we discover each time a different dimension in each photograph; each landscape suddenly becoming more mysterious and seductive. Nowadays we are so accustomed to the perfect colour photographs with the awesome analysis. It is precisely this fact that reinforces our conviction that this technique offers a more organic texture and sensation. It creates a different atmosphere and opens the door to another world where everyone can imagine and feel something different.
Is the story behind every “click” reflected in the design of your series?
Everything we create –from the photos to the clothes and homeware accessories– comes from a personal story, a journey, our acquaintance, our family... Everything has a strong personal, experiential element. Something that we aspire to continue in the future because it gives meaning and joy to what we do. The subject of photography is interwoven with our aesthetics, our personalities and our relationship. Simplicity and love for the handmade and nature is something that characterises both of us so it comes out in our work. Transforming a photo into a dress or a scarf is an interesting and unexpected
development that we do not imagine in advance. We transform our experiences and feelings into something creative and beautiful hoping to add beauty to the lives of other people.
Which is the most positive and encouraging comment on your activity and which is the one that got you thinking?
It’s not a comment as such, but it’s the moments! When we see the reactions of the people visiting our exhibitions! It’s wonderful to see how your creation can touch, move or make a person happy... There is nothing more encouraging than that. On the other hand, we have been reflecting on various tips of people more experienced than us about the commercial part of this job, in a place that is quite competitive and saturated. It is a new venture for us and it is true that we have a lot to learn. However, our goal is to find a model that will allow us to continue our adventure with the same moral principles and passion!
Always having the Cyclades as your destination?
The truth is that the minimalist, simple and very photogenic aesthetics of the Cyclades is an inexhaustible source of inspiration. The relaxed and humane way of life, the magical time of the sunset and the endless blue! But on the other hand, we are very excited because we are leaving soon for our next big trip. This time we cross the border of Greece and go to a magical country. We want to experiment with aerial photographs and we think there is no better place than Iceland.
